Anxiety group

When anxiety makes life narrow, withdrawing is the obvious answer.

And it is the one that makes it worse in the long run. In a group the opposite happens: you practise exactly where it is hard, with people who are in a similar place.

Twelve weeks, a fixed group, in person in Frankfurt am Main. Six to nine people who begin together and finish together.

Why a group works

Why a group, of all things, helps.

With social anxiety, the thing you are afraid of is exactly what is in the room: other people. At first that sounds like the wrong place to be. In fact it is the right one, because every session is a real social situation, not a conversation about one.

And there is something individual therapy cannot offer. You hear other people say out loud what you know from the inside. That takes away part of what makes the anxiety feel self-evident: the assumption that there is something wrong with you personally.

You also get feedback from people who have no reason to be polite: how you actually come across. With social anxiety, that is often the part nobody saw coming.

Here you do not rehearse how it might go. You do it. With people who are in a similar place.

  • 6–9 people

A closed group: everyone starts and finishes the twelve weeks together, and nobody joins later.

  • 12 weeks

One session per week, over twelve weeks.

  • 100 minutes

Per session, in person at the practice. Groups do not take place online.

  • 2027 start

The first group begins as soon as six places are confirmed, expected in early 2027.

Joining

How you get into the group.

  1. Enquiry

You write to me or call. I get back to you within two working days, and we clarify what your situation is and whether the group is the right setting for it.

  2. Preliminary appointment at the practice

A single appointment: your history, your goals, your concerns and what awaits you in the group. This appointment is billed as an individual session.

  3. Confirming your place

You sign the group agreement: confidentiality, attendance, how cancellations are handled. That reserves your place.

  4. Start, once six people have confirmed

I give you the start date three to four weeks in advance. Places seven to nine can still be filled up to the second week.

Inside a session

Every session has the same shape.

Every session has the same shape, and that is deliberate: when you are anxious, you need to know what is coming. We begin with a short round: how the week went and what you tried out.

Then comes a topic: how avoidance works, what happens in the body, how to examine an anxious thought. After that we practise, in role plays, in small tasks in pairs, sometimes outside as well.

At the end everyone takes away a concrete task for the week. None of it happens as a surprise: you know beforehand what it is about, and you have a say in how far you go.

Fees

Common questions

What participants ask before they start.

Do I have to speak in front of everyone?
You decide in every session how much you say. Nobody is called on, and nobody has to do an exercise they don't feel up to. At the same time I want to be honest: sitting through twelve weeks in silence would be a waste of your place. So we start small and build up at your pace.
What if I know someone in the group?
Please tell me at the preliminary appointment. I put the group together so that people who know each other personally or through work are not in the same group. If it only becomes apparent at the first session, we talk about it straight away and you get a place in the next group. Everyone also signs a confidentiality agreement: what is said in the group stays there.
Can I combine the group with individual therapy?
The group does not replace individual therapy, and it does not require one either. The two combine well: many people work on their history in individual therapy and use the group as a place to practise. If you are already in treatment with another therapist, a place in the group is still possible. With your consent I then briefly coordinate with the person treating you.
What if I miss a session?
A missed session is no disaster. I send you a short summary and the exercise for the week, so that you stay connected. Your place is kept for you. How cancellations are handled is set out in the group agreement, which you read beforehand.
